Alicia Keys - Like You'll Never See Me Again |
] |
Due to some unforeseen insomnia, I decided to google my name just to see what's new. Damn that Hong Kong squash player! She's everywhere on the listed results, and I must say: not cute. Giving me a bad rep.
On top of that, there's an Annie Au in Seattle, WA who is also defaming my good name. Seattle's Most Wanted
Finally! A listing that's really about me! PBS never even told me that they ended up using something I said. How rude...I had to google my own name to find this:
Studying and Working Abroad a Growing Passion for Young Americans Preparing for a global future "...Annie Au, a 23-year-old business and psychology graduate of the University of Washington, is part of the first group of U.S. Infosys recruits to train in India.
"I see myself as more of an indirect contributor by working for a company that exemplifies the expansion of globalization," she said..."

Mya - Best of Me (remix) |
] |
On Monday, I was sitting in reception at the Apollo Hospital, waiting for my friend's medication to be dispensed. Next to me was a family of about seven. A little boy around the age of 5 or 6 sat atop his grandmother's lap. They both turned to me and started speaking in the local dialect. Through non-verbal cues and plain old guessing, I figured that they were asking me where I was from. Eventually, the little boy busted out w/some English he had learned in school and asked me for my name. They start young, don't they? When I replied, the boy, his grandmother, and his sisters responded with delight. His mother, who had been pacing, heard the commotion and walked over. She said something to her son, and herein lies the reason for this entry: his fly was open. Here he is, spitting game at an older woman, and a foreign woman mind you, and his fly is open. After she uttered those words, I could see the embarrassment come over his face. For a couple of seconds, he was frozen with disbelief. What did I do to help the situation? I laughed so hard, right along with his mother, grandmother, and sisters. I hope this doesn't scar the kid for life.

| A little raving mixed in w/some ranting |
[03 Sep 2006|05:12pm] |
Raves * Chocolate Indulgence Full Body Massage It began with a small prayer and then scalp massage. This was followed by a thorough rubdown of melted chocolate, body scrub, and then a chocolate body mask. Yes, I was only sporting a small loincloth that was provided to me, but there is no time to be timid when it comes to a massage. The two lady masseuses and I got real familiar real fast. After a 20 minute nap, I woke up to take a shower, after which I was asked to jump into the jacuzzi for 15 minutes. The added bonus was I smelled like chocolate all day :)
* Sweet Lassi & Mosambi Juice I am so addicted to these two drinks. Sweet lassi is basically yogurt drink w/lime juice. Very filling and supposedly good for digestion. I think I might have mentioned mosambi juice in a previous entry, but I should reiterate how much I love it. Sooo good!
* Care Package Isn't strange how something so small can make you feel so much better? Gummy candies, cheddar pretzels, bbq sunflower seeds, and some dvds. If only I could figure out how to get my hands on some sushi...
* Chinese Batch is here! For over a month now, I have been receiving some unwanted attention. My theory involved the fact that I was one of a few East Asian girls here on campus. Over the weekend, a group of 100 Chinese arrived to campus. I have noticed I don't get stared at by the Indians as much, but I do get stared at by the new arrivals. I honestly believe this is because they are trying to figure out if I came with them. So far, one Indian has asked me if I am a part of the Chinese batch. I'm going to keep a running count of this.
* Wearing Indian Garb Because I foolishly underpacked, I have been busy filling my closet w/Indian clothes including salwar kamazes, saris, and cortas. It's definitely fun to try and blend in, but I find that I draw more attention to myself when I do wear these clothes. At least I look good, haha.
Rants * Movies @ the Multiplex A cultural difference: the local Indians like to go to the movies to chat with their friends, including having their cellphones ringer on full blast and answering all calls. I tried to be understanding, but it really doesn't make sense to me. Why pay for a movie you don't even really care to watch? I wonder if it like this all over the country, or just on the campus...
* Lack of Variety in Food Variety is the spice of life, right? So why is it that in a country that is known for their spices, there is no variety whatsoever. This could be attributed to where in India I am currently residing, but it is seriously starting to wear on me. On campus, there is only Indian food and Domino's pizza. Off campus, I eat more Indian food and Indian-flavored "Chinese" food. Perhaps a weekend trip to Bangalore is in order. At least they have a TGIF and a Subway there.
* Too Many Rules The ridiculous amount of rules and ridiculous rules themselves are very much annoying now. One night, I was trying to get my school books from Stanley, who lives on the top floor. I called him and asked him to drop them down from his balcony so that he wouldn't have to walk all the way down. A security guard comes running from the other side of the courtyard and proceeds to bite my head off about how I am not allowed to cross the imaginary line that ended at the sidewalk. Then last night, a group of boys organized some Hold'em but alas, I wasn't able to play because I am a lady and ladies aren't allowed in the gents' room. And why can't we watch movies using the projector in the computer labs? So lame!
* Winning 2nd out of Two Teams Rhea and Alisha convinced me to play in the championship game for the girls' bball tourney. My apprehension in playing in the other games stemmed from the fact that I'm not very good, but mostly it was because I am lazy. Our team had a slow first half, but we played our hearts out in the second. We lost by 4 points. Boo.. * Falling Down It rained right before our game and during our game. The basketball was going out of bounds so I ran after it, not thinking about the wet ground that I was running on. I "gracefully" fell and now I have a scratch and bruise on my knee. The other night, I tried riding on the back of a bicycle going uphill on campus. Bad idea. I got dropped. Reminds me of Friday night when Anush claimed he could carry me and Rhea on his back. I jumped on, and we came tumbling down, but again, somehow it is only me that ends up flat on my back on the ground.

It's been awhile since my last entry. The course material we are studying (C Language) is a bit more difficult than I had anticipated. It doesn't help that the teacher goes way too fast and stops teaching at noon and expects us to do the assignments anyway. I can't complain too much though because I lucked out and have some smart & helpful people in my group who are willing to put up w/my stupid questions and lack of motivation. Although it doesn't help that they share my passion for playing the Nintendo DS, haha. I go to class at 9 am and don't usually leave the computer lab until 630-730pm, minus tea breaks & lunch.
As for things I've been doing for fun, three weekends ago a group of us took a bus up to Bangalore. This city was known for it's clubbing, but apparently a few months ago, they implemented a city-wide ordinance that requires that clubs close at 11:15pm. Pretty lame. Bangalore was madness...I truly feared for my life when crossing the street. Cars, buses, rickshaws, and motorcycles like to speed up when you're walking across. 10 points. The weekend after that another group of us went to Ooty and then Bandipur. Ooty is a city atop a high mountain peak. Beautiful. The cool air was refreshing. As for Bandipur, we went there for a safari. The variety of animals that we could actually see was disappointing, but riding on the elephant at the end made up for it. I can check that off my list now.
It's funny how even though I traveled to the other side of the world, I have the same old luck. Last night, I was watching the basketball tournament here on campus while eating pizza. Out of no where, a fatty bug lands on my head, and then falls on my knee. After a quick freakout, I am just happy that it did not land in my musumbi juice.

For personal reasons, it's been difficult for me to get excited by the NBA this season. I mean, I didn't even join a fantasy league this year. But thanks to the playoffs, especially the 6 games played Monday, yesterday & today, I think my affinity for the NBA is renewed. The Cavs leading the Pistons in the series? Clippers in the 2nd round? Dallas over the Spurs? 2OT, OT, 1 point, 2 point games. Oooh whee! Not to mention, Barkley and Kenny's random banter on Inside the NBA. I love this game!

You know how you can tell how old a tree is by counting its rings? This is a similar concept. I just found a hair on my head that is 2/3 black, but 1/3 white from the root. I think it's indicative of the unbearable stress I've been enduring these past several months. When is it going to get easier? I'm starting to doubt that it will....

This time, instead of literally fighting bugs, I am dealing w/the figurative ones: an AIM virus! God...how do people get enjoyment out of creating programs that cause so much trouble? My cousin "sent" me an IM that read:
Where should I post the pictures of us? On facebook or myspace?
Included was a link. Under normal circumstances, I'd like to believe that my common sense would have intervened and stopped me from clicking it. But because it was my cousin, I thought he was talking about childhood pictures that included Victor, so I clicked without hesitation. The virus proceeded to instant message my buddy list with the same message. By the time I was finally able to exit the AIM, it was too late. Some of my them had fallen victim as well. I ran Norton Anti-Virus, Ad-Aware, & AimFix, as well as manually deleting the file I downloaded. I hope this was enough. I don't want someone to steal my identity!
For Lent, I am giving up AIM. You can still find me on MSN Messenger (derekobecniv@hotmail.com), GoogleTalk/Gmail, MySpace, & Facebook. I've always liked the interface of MSN Messenger better anyway.

I'm an evil person. When Andrew told me that a Cessna had crashed last Thursday in Renton, I said something along the lines of "big deal." A couple of days later I read the newspaper, and saw that one of the two men that died was "Chun Kit 'Jack' Ho, 25, recent UW graduate..." Hmm, I know someone named Jack Ho who is around that age and graduated from UW. After doing some research via the internet & myspace.com, I confirmed that it was indeed my friend's older brother. Tragic..but in a way it wasn't. Although he was only 25 years old, he accomplished so much and was last doing what he loved best: flying. This got me thinking...would I be happy with how I've lived my life if I was to die today? There are a couple of close relationships I would like to mend before that time comes. Why do I have to be so stubborn? I want to travel and perhaps live in another country for a bit. Although I cherish my TV, I wish I had more hobbies. I know I'm not quite the most adventurous person, but maybe I should at least try. The one time I went snowboarding I didn't kill myself, so I should give it another shot. Not that my life has been a complete waste up to this point..although we may be dysfunctional and want to hurt each other at times, I love my family. I hope they know that. I've made some great friends, had good times. But nope, I'm not ready to go anytime soon.

something interesting happened at work today. this guy was trying to return a lacoste shirt, but he is a WA resident who was shopping in OR. i was unfamiliar w/the procedure to handle a tax exempt return w/o proper ID. as i was calling customer service, he and the guy next to him started chatting. the guy after him was trying to return some Sevens, and said to lacoste shirt guy that the jeans fit him too tight and made him look gay. so the lacoste shirt guy said "what did you say? what do you mean by that? because i'm gay." intense moment. i wouldn't have guessed him gay either. next he said, "would u like it if i said something looked 'nigger'"? interestingly enough, the Sevens guy appeared to be of african decent, but was indeed puerto rican (he pointed this out later). i thought there was gonna be trouble, but then the Sevens guy apologized and they shook hands and started talking like amigos. yay, no bloodshed.

| Memorial Day Weekend |
[01 Jun 2005|02:20pm] |
It's so nice to take a whole weekend off from schoolwork, at least for the most part. On Friday, I picked up my cousin Michael from Northgate. He's stationed @ Ft.Lewis and I haven't seen him for two years, so it was really great having him hang out at the house for the weekend. After a lot of sweat & tears to get my friends together for a poker night, he and I were heading down to Seattle when Victor called and said he'd just gotten off work. I (being the nice person I am) turned around and pick him up from home. So the first game was semi-entertaining, whatever. I was 3rd or 4th out, lost to someone chasing a straight...he caught it on the river. It was the second game that hurt the most. There were 3 of us remaining, me, Vic, and Justin. Victor had a commanding chip lead almost the entire game, running off of no sleep of course. On one crucial hand, I am holding pocket 8's and I flop trips. Now, Victor says some comment like "ooooh I flopped a straight flush" but all of us kinda ignore it...He goes all-in. Now, I'm trying to decide what to do. There is potential for a flush, there is potential for a straight, but I didn't wanna back down, so I call. Turns out that he thought all 3 flop cards were diamonds, when in reality one of them was a heart. So he didn't catch his flush, and I won all of his chips except for 4. Everyone thought he was done for. He only had enough for one more small blind. And then it happened...the greatest comeback I've ever witnessed. He kept doubling, tripling up on me and Justin, eventually winning ~8-10 hands in a row and reclaiming chip lead. On the last hand, Justin went all-in. I had flopped high pair, Kings w/an Ace kicker. I called, and Vic called for the heck of it. Turns out Victor is holding a 9 & 8, needing either a 10 or 5 on the river to catch a straight. What happens? Yes, he catches the 5. Again, I lost on the river to someone chasing the straight. So instead of winning back my $10, Victor wins the whole pot of $30. I knew I shouldn't have turned around to pick his ass up...
Saturday included dimsum and then a lil bit of hw, just working on a powerpoint presentation. Then it was time for fun at some gaming complex in Issaquah. Played some DDR & ParaParaParadise. I swear, my cousin is the best at that game. Andrew & I even gave it a shot (I got a video of Andrew doing it w/my digital camera..funniest thing ever! Ask me if you want to see it, hahaha). Also, I kept my Pop-a-Shot crown..40 to 29, bitches. For dinner we tried some new japanese restaurant owned by Vietnamese people. There was a sushi bar, a section where u could watch the chefs demonstrate their knife-tossing skills, but we decided on the tatami mat room (my first time!)...pretty neat. Who knew you didn't actually have to sit on your legs atop the pillows? No one told me there was a hole in the ground underneath the table. We were gonna get dessert at 611 Supreme because Michael & I were craving crepes, but alas, parking on Capitol Hill on a Saturday night eluded us, so we just went home and watched the Chappelle show marathon.
Sunday brunch was dimsum, again. Stopped by the store afterward to buy beer for my uncle's bbq. It felt weird to buy beer again, esp. since Michael & Vic are underage and couldn't come inside with me. BBQ was good eating, good times. I got to play Taboo and Egyptian Ratscrew!!! I must say, Victor and I dominated at ratscrew. Don't mess w/the Au's, not even you "dream team." We left the bbq shortly after my drunk uncle and his drunk friends started singing along to a boombox in the backyard, using their beer bottles as pseudomicrophones. Sooo Vietnamese! "Hotel California" and Lobo!! Haha. Came home and then watched live-action Sailor Moon episodes from Japan w/the fam. It's by the same people who did Power Rangers! Hahaha..it's actually pretty good though.
Monday, went to another BBQ definitely not Vietnamese style. It was hosted by a Black family, so there was meat, greens, corn, and jello cornbread? (some kind of bread). Michael and I stopped by the Olive Garden on the way back to Ft. Lewis for dinner. Yummy! Once we got to Ft.Lewis, I had to sign up for a visitor's pass. I didn't realize they were so stringent, but I had to show them my registration & insurance. Of course, my insurance card was expired to my surprise, so I had to call Geico and have them email proof of insurance to the base. The barracks remind me a lot of dorming, even down to the wooden wardrobes and twin size beds. Before this weekend, I used to snicker at those corny people who have the "support our troop" ribbons on the backside of their cars, but now that I have an actual family member in the Army, it's totally different. I'm gonna proudly sport the yellow ribbon he gave me on my C-rolla.
Tuesday, quite a bad day actually. I woke up and wanted to check email before class, but my computer was being incredibly slow..I tried to restart, but it froze when I hit the 'start' menu, so I manually pressed the reset button. Pretty much, after that my computer didn't want to boot up completely. I got depressed and decided to skip my one class of the day. While I sat eating some Yoplait, I spooned up a portion of yogurt only to have the spoon drop on my tummy, yogurt all over the place. Greeeat. Later while running up the stairs to check on my computer, I trip and fall. Greeeat. I was scared to leave the house. What a bad day. Then to top it off, Andrew and I got into an argument. He's going to Las Vegas with THREE SINGLE GUYS for 5 days and 4 nights. I just knooooow they are gonna go to a strip club, I mean how long can you gamble for esp w/a limited income? Sigh. I won't get into details of our fight, but it wasn't pretty. I want him to go...there I said it. I actually DO want him to go, I just don't wanna hear about any boobies that he may be rubbing his face in. Ignorance is bliss, right? RIGHT?

why do boys feel the need to make unnecessary comments? i.e. "wow, you weigh more than me" "wow your arms are hairier than mine!" or "wow, you sweat more than i do!" okay, i give you credit for your honesty and bluntness, and i myself am not the expert of tact, but i really don't think girls like to hear these kinds of observations. plus, isn't it in some way a bit emasculating?

Sometimes I wonder how I make it through the day without killing myself. I'm so freakin' clumsy. Yesterday I went to lunch w/Andrew's parents for dimsum. I made sure to pour the chrysanthemum tea very carefully so I didn't spill...Ok, pheew. As the server returned to take some custom orders, I reached for a shu mai, it slips out of my chopsticks, bounces off the banana-leaf wrapped sticky rice, and into Andrew's cup of tea. Of all the places to ricochet, I don't know how it landed in the tea. The server starts laughing, as Andrew and his parents laughed at me. Sure, I attempted to join in their enjoyment at my expense, but I was pretty embarrassed.

Andrew & I landed into Dulles Airport in DC at 4pm as scheduled. With a three hour layover, we were mentally prepared to wait...What we didn't expect was the hour delay of our connecting flight which was dragged out until 10pm and finally cancelled. I've been avoiding using my co-workers names because I really don't want to call them by the wrong one. If I concentrate hard enough, I know who is who, but with names that are so similar (Jen, Janie, Jonis, Jeannie) I don't want to mess up. But of course, I go ahead and get myself confused anyway. Jen was talking to me about Jonis, but I had a brain fart and referred to her as Jonah. I don't even KNOW a Jonah. Where did I get that name from?? Sigh...

It's nice to finally be done with another quarter of school; only 4 more to go...Drew - CONGRATS Grad! You're my hero! Some of you may be wondering where I have disappeared to and the explanation is pretty simple: I was working on a bunch of group projects/papers, I live near Canada, and I like to get 8 hours of sleep. Sucks but I am working today and tomorrow from 930-6 so I can't hang out until Saturday night. My dear friends on LJ, if you even read this, please reserve that time to hang out with me...don't flake out, don't tell me that you are going "home home", don't say "i don't have money"...i don't care! We ARE going to hang out and that is that!
